Two candidates have been nominated for the vacant position of Clare GAA Assistant Secretary.

A vacancy for the post arose following the election of Ann Hayes to Public Relations Officer (PRO) and on Tuesday, clubs are expected to vote to appoint the Lissycasey’s woman successor.

Former inter-county referee, Ambrose Heagney of the Corofin club has been nominated along with Deirdre Chaplin of Cratloe, she has been the secretary of the South Clare club for the past decade.

Heagney currently serves on Clare GAA’s Competitions Controls Committee (CCC) and had been the delegate for his club until at County Board meetings until very recently. He officiated four Clare SHC finals during his time as a referee and was part of the backroom team during Davy Fitzgerald’s final year in charge of the Clare hurlers in 2016.

A daughter of former Clare GAA Chairman, Jack Chaplin, Deirdre has been heavily involved in her local club at a time of great success including their memorable senior championship double in 2014. She is considered locally as a very progressive administrator in the organisation.

Cooraclare’s Sean Chambers is the sole nominee for the role of Assistant Treasurer on Clare GAA. The position has been without an office since the sudden resignation of Tony Brohan in the past two months, he is a member of the Éire Óg club.

Club delegates will vote on whether it is Heagney or Chaplin that will take on the role at Tuesday’s meeting of the County Board which is also expected to discuss the Clare SFC following the decision of Western Gaels to withdraw.
