INTERIM IMPROVEMENTS are to be carried out at the entrance to Illaunmanagh Graveyard while a decision is made on a proposal for Active Travel funding.

An update of the existing entrance to Illaunmanagh Graveyard was requested by Cllr Gerry Flynn (IND). “The increased volume of traffic entering and exiting the public facilities is having an impact on safety concerns due in some parts to limited sight lines at the entrance,” he flagged. The proposal was seconded by Cllr Donna McGettigan (SF).

Senior executive engineer in the Shannon Municipal District, Tom Mellett confirmed that a design proposal for Active Travel funding has been submitted to cover footpath upgrades at the location. “The sight distance’s as you emerge from the graveyard road will be included in these works. An interim improvement will be carried out in the meantime”.

Speaking at the May meeting of the Shannon MD, Cllr Flynn referenced the level of traffic in the vicinity with the crematorium, sporting facilities and walkways, “there’s a hell of a lot of people accessing this way”. He was pleased the appeal “got a bit of traction this time” having previously raised the matter on a number of occasions.

“There is a lot of movement especially with the crematorium, the entrance to the graveyard and sports field, that entrance needs to be rejigged, it was never designed for traffic,” Cllr PJ Ryan (IND) commented.
