COMPLAINTS made against Gardaí in the Clare Division increased last year but remain among the lowest in the country. 

In the annual report by the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC), it revealed that a total of 61 complaints were opened relating Clare Garda Division last year, up on the tally of 46 for 2020. Detail on each of the complaints and the manner of them was not provided in the report.

Clare’s total is the lowest of a single county in Munster and is the second lowest in the Republic of Ireland with only Sligo/Leitrim recording a smaller tally (40).

Of the 2,189 complaints received by GSOC nationally, they are to do with customer service (17%), road policing (14%), arrest (14%), search (person or property) (12%), investigations (11%), domestic incident (4%), court proceedings (4%), property issue (3%), during police custody (3%), public order policing (3%), disclosure of information (2%), civil matter (2%), public event (2%) and other (9%).

Recent years have seen a total of 79 (2019), 100 (2018) and 96 (2017) complaints filed to GSOC for the Clare Division.
