OFFICES OF THE SHANNON MUNICIPAL DISTRICT were damaged on Wednesday evening.

A male pensioner (89) accidentally drove into the offices of the Shannon MD after paying a bill. He misfortunately pressed the accelerator instead of the brake on his Nissan car after making the transaction in Shannon town.

No persons were injured but the driver of the car was said to be very shook after the accident.

Clare County Council have confirmed that the Shannon MD offices are now temporarily closed to the public “until further notice”. Services can still be accessed by phone on 061-362319; email to shannonmunicipaldistrict@clarecoco.ie.

Local authority staff have cordoned off the entrance to the MD office. Repairs to the building are likely to cost in excess of €1000.

Activity at the MD offices has only increased in recent weeks with access loosening following the easing of COVID-19 restrictions. As it is one of the smaller Council offices in the county, public access had been very limited for close to two years.
