A SUBMISSION is to be made to the National Transport Authority (NTA) to extend the footpath out the Ennis Rd in Miltown Malbay.
Senior executive engineer in the West Clare Municipal District, Enda MacNamara confirmed that a submission will be put to the NTA under the Active Travel scheme seeking funding to extend the existing footpath on the Ennis Rd in Miltown Malbay.
It follows a request from Cllr Shane Talty (FF) who appealed for the footpath to be extended to the end of the 50km/h zone.
An approximate twenty properties, car garage and a GP’s surgery are located on what Cllr Talty called “a very busy stretch of road”. Proactive householders have made the appeal easier, he said, “they’ve already gathered written consent of about 20 property owners which is required to install a stretch of footpath here. When you’ve an active residents’ group then you have universal consent and support for the project and it is one we absolutely need to be behind”.
He praised the Active Travel scheme which he believed “opened up so many opportunities for us to improve on the infrastructure in our towns and villages. When an active community group comes together with a proposal and a lot of the ground work done on it, I think it is great that we can give a positive indication and put it forward for funding and I don’t doubt it will be successful, it should be a major improvement there either late this year or early next year”.
Talty’s proposal was seconded by Cllr Joe Killeen (FF), “it is a very busy section of the road, there are lots of pedestrians and houses there, it is something that needs to be prioritised and put forward”.
