GAA CLUBS in Clare have been encouraged to hold bucket collections for league games to aid the people of Ukraine.
In correspondence issued to clubs, Clare GAA Chairman Kieran Keating recommended that clubs hosting fixtures in the Cusack Cup, Garry Cup, Clare Cup and lower divisions have a bucket collection “to solicit donations from patrons”.
Keating praised clubs who have already organised collections, donated proceeds from their weekly Lotto and held other fundraisers in aid of the different charities assisting the millions of refugees and victims in Ukraine following Russia’s invasion.
“As there is no admission fee being charged at those gates, we hope that members and supporters will dig deep and give generously,” he said.
While the recommendation has been issued by the Chairman, clubs will decide how best to operate at their own grounds. He confirmed that a collection will be held at Cusack Park prior to the meeting of Clare and Meath in the Allianz National Football League.
He added, “Proceeds can be aggregated and we will channel via one of the registered charities operating in Ukraine and its border states; collections including coin can be dropped to Clareabbey in the next two weeks and we’ll count and report the results. If clubs already have a charity lined up to receive funds, they can of course proceed in that manner”.
