INCREASED traffic volumes in Ballymorris have accelerated the deterioration of the roads in the area, county councillors have claimed.

An appeal for works to be carried out on the L7121 in Ballymorris, Cratloe was lodged by Cllr John Crowe (FG) at a sitting of the Shannon Municipal District. โ€œIt is in a bad state of repair and has deteriorated further due to the volume of traffic on this road,โ€ he commented.

Senior executive engineer, Tom Mellett confirmed than an assessment would take place on the L7121 with maintenance to be carried out โ€œas appropriateโ€.

โ€œThis road you could say is a link road but it is a road with a lot of dwellings in, a lot of senior people living there, it is used a lot for walking,โ€ Cllr Crowe explained. He flagged, โ€œthe complete fabric of the road is gone on the sides, it needs to be strengthened, it is gone at the sideโ€.

Road improvements are needed but water flow is also an issue, Cllr Pat Oโ€™Gorman (FF) outlined. โ€œThere is a lot of water when it rains coming out from surrounding lands. When youโ€™re looking and assessing it, the water coming onto the road will still be there and water will be wastedโ€.

Following โ€œserious accidentsโ€ in recent months on the M18, traffic had to be diverted through Cratloe, โ€œit did serious damage, the road was never intended for HGVs, they pulled down cables the last time,โ€ Cllr PJ Ryan (IND) maintained. โ€œResidents were without Wifi and connections for most of a week,โ€ he added.
