SIXMILEBRIDGE is to have a mobility plan devised for the area.

In December, it was confirmed that Sixmilebridge was to receive €100,000 from the Department of Rural and Community Development as part of a town centre scheme. It was one of the twenty six areas included in the €2.6m scheme which looks to tackle derelict and vacant properties to make town centres more attractive places to live, work, socialise and run a business in.

A mobility plan is included in the preparation of this, it will “consider modes of transport, desire lines for walking and cycling routes and means of connectivity between the commercial centre and residential areas,” senior executive engineer with the Shannon Municipal District, Tom Mellett stated.

An appeal to conduct the mobility plan was voiced by Cllr John Crowe (FG). “It would be an opportune time for such a plan considering the current preparation of the Clare County Development Plan,” he maintained.

Crowe added, “Now is the ideal time to include a mobility plan, you have so many different housing estates that went up in Sixmilebridge over the last few years, a lot of these can be connected to the town with the walkways”. He referenced a sizeable increase in the volume of traffic going through the area and the amount of people walking in the locality.

According to Cllr PJ Ryan (IND), “serious work was carried out in the last couple of months, it has brought Sixmilebridge into a very modern era”. He noted that “a lot of money” has been paid in planning levies through the continued development of The Bridge, “money is coming around and Sixmilebridge will benefit,” he predicted. Cllr Pat O’Gorman (FF) also supported the calls for a mobility plan.
