ONE COUNTY COUNCILLOR has been kept awake at night due to a manhole cover between Cratloe and Sixmilebridge.

Addressing Tom Mellett, the senior executive engineer of the Shannon MD, Cllr Pat O’Gorman (FF) revealed that local road infrastructure was disrupting his sleep rather than the dozens of daily calls for constituents.

Located below the level of the road at O’Gorman’s Cross, the poorly fitted manhole cover has impacted on the sweet dreams of the Cratloe man. “The manhole cover is outside my door, Tom it keeps me awake at night and that is a fact, going bang bang bang morning, noon and night”.

He explained that cars and lorries are even coming across the road to avoid the mahole cover. “It is only a matter of time before there will be a smash, it’s a big manhole cover and the noise is constant,” O’Gorman commented.

Repairs to the R462 between Cratloe Cross and Sixmilebridge to the road subsiding near the cul de sac at the cross, the subsiding road near Killeen Cemetery and the manhole cover were sought by Cllr PJ Ryan (IND).

Mellett in response to his motion confirmed that the locations would be assessed “to determine the scale of the problem and what is required to ensure they are maintained to an appropriate standard”.

Speaking at a meeting of the Shannon MD, Cllr Ryan acknowledged the manhole cover was “making a lot of noise”. He added, “after you pass the graveyard, there is a drop, when people hear the bang they swerve out on the road”.

“It is very dangerous, you would get a right belt if you went into it,” Cllr John Crowe (FG).
