A PETITION opposed to the potential of making the Mill Rd a one-way traffic system has amassed 730 signatures within a week.

Proposals to make the Mill Rd a one-way traffic system with traffic to be diverted via Old Mill Rd and Considine’s Terrace have received strong backlash since they appeared in a draft of the Ennis local transport plan.

Within a week, a total of 730 signatures have put their name to a petition calling on the Ennis Municipal District not to proceed with the one-way plan.

Members of the public including residents in Hermitage, Cornmarket St and Old Mill Rd along with business people in the locality attended Tuesday’s meeting of the Ennis Municipal District to show they were opposed to the plans.

Executive members of the Ennis MD were presented with a copy of the petition which had the 730 signatures.

Speaking to The Clare Echo, Pat Foudy explained, “This petition has been going on for a week and so far 730 people have signed it. It just shows the opposition that there is to the traffic plan, it is completely not workable”.

He flagged that the figure will rise by the time public submissions close this Friday (July 11th). “These are people in the locality, they are working there or it is where they live, they access the Mill Rd many times a day, it is very important that this petition shows that the people are against it”.

When asked if he was happy with how Tuesday’s Ennis MD meeting transpired, Foudy stated, “We’re not happy no”.
