THREE ATHLETES from the Shannon Flyers Special Olympics sports club will represent Team Munster in the All-Ireland games.
Shannon Flyers was formed in 2004, a year after the World Special Olympics Games were held in Dublin. Special Olympics athletes compete in athletic events from 25 metre to 3,000 metre races and field events such as softball , mini javelin, shot putt, high jump and long jump.
Twenty five athletes are registered with the Shannon club and they train once a week every Saturday at the athletic track of Lees Rd from September to March.
Lucy O’Brien, Colm McCarthy and Cormac Ross from the Shannon club have been selected to compete with the Munster team in the All-Ireland games which will be held in Morton Athletic Stadium in Santry from Friday (June 19th) to Sunday (June 21st).
The athletes will be accompanied by Therese Ross who will be their coach chaperone and will look after the athletes for the duration of the games. Club member Carmel Cronin is the Assistant Head of Delegation for all 520 Munster athletes and chaperones and two other club members, Frank Fitzgerald and Donagh Cronin are competition manager and field of play coordinator at Morton Stadium.
Parents and volunteers are very involved in the club and have worked hard to raise the funds needed for the athletes to attend the games. The support of Clare County Council and Shannon Athletic Club for the use of facilities has also been praised by the club.
