A SPECIAL Clare career came to an end on Sunday with the two point All-Ireland semi-final defeat bringing to a halt Shane O’Donnell’s days in saffron and blue.
Though it was widely known that 2026 would be the last hurrah for Shane, at media appearances in advance of the semi-final he confirmed that he would be retiring from inter-county hurling whenever Clare exited the championship.
Clare went out with a bang but Sunday’s spirited display was not enough to stop Limerick and so it brought the curtain down on the remarkable career of an Ennis man who proved to be an inspiration in his thirteen year spell with Clare’s senior hurlers.
It began in Semple Stadium back June 2013 when he scored a goal in his senior debut, Clare beating Waterford 2-20 1-15, the county winning a first provincial game at the grade in five years. He showed his goal-scoring ability in that game and the qualifier win over Laois but the star was truly born with his heroic hat-trick to help Davy Fitzgerald’s side win the All-Ireland SHC with a 5-16 3-16 replay win over Cork that September.
Nobody would have anticipated it would take eleven years before O’Donnell picked up a second Celtic Cross with Brian Lohan’s side overcoming Cork in an extra time epic on a score of 3-29 1-34.
Along the way, Shane was honoured with All Star awards in 2022, 2023 and 2024 while he was named Hurler of the Year following a sensational campaign in 2024.
His sixty third appearance for the county seniors was his last, scoring 16-82 and lifting the spirits of Clare hurling supporters on countless occasions.
Speaking following Sunday’s loss, Shane was an emotional figure when he attempted to reflect on such a storied career. “It’s been an honour to wear the Clare jersey, I’ve enjoyed every minute of it, I’ve always had the trite response that I will reflect on my career when it is done so I don’t have an answer right now but maybe in time I will be able to look back on it, I’ve loved every minute of it. The guys in the dressing room, every player I’ve ever played with in a Clare jersey I’ve been proud to stand beside them, they showed it today and I’m always proud wearing this jersey”.
Matching Limerick for aggression was a big focus for Clare, he explained. “It has been a whirlwind of a couple of weeks, at the same time you’re preparing for an All-Ireland semi-final so I tried to focus on the game at hand. It was a disappointing result against them earlier in the year so a lot of the talk coming in was to make sure we were aggressive and meet them at the pitch of it, then take it man by man”.
He continued, “That is what we’ve been talking about (matching them from the off), you have to get the tactics right to apply the pressure and apply the aggression but once you have the tactics it is all about the pressure you apply on the ball and the work you can do and getting off the shoulder”.
Tactics will not define whether a team wins or loses, Shane outlined. “All tactics do is give you an opportunity to get close enough to a ball to get it in your hand or apply the pressure, that is all the tactics do, tactical masterclasses really are a combination of the application and the tactics themselves. We wanted to be able to get in their face, be aggressive, make it a tough game and bring it down to a fight, we were happy with where we are at by half time but we wanted to push on and we struggled to get the ball in our hands in the second half especially through our puckouts and they started to come back at us so that bit is disappointing and the result is extraordinarily disappointing”.
