CLARECASTLE’S John Callinan has been honoured with a lifetime achievement award by the Gaelic Players Association (GPA).
Callinan and six time All-Ireland winner with Cork’s camogie side Fiona O’Driscoll were presented with the accolades at the annual legends lunch held in Croke Park last Friday.
Joining him in Croke Park were proud Magpies, two time All-Ireland winning Clare captain Anthony Daly, former Mayor of Clare Cllr Paul Murphy (FG), past Clarecastle chairman Niall Tuohy and former Editor of The Clare People, Emmet Moloney.
Both Callinan and O’Driscoll were recognised for their contributions to gaelic games spanning decades including their decorated playing careers and a continued commitment to developing and promoting Gaelic games long after retirement.
A two-time National Hurling League winner with Clare in 1977 and 1978, John enjoyed a distinguished inter-county career. He won three Railway Cup medals with Munster and was honoured with All Star awards in 1979 and 1981.
At club level, John won Clare SHC titles with Clarecastle in 1986 and 1987.
His contribution to Gaelic games has extended far beyond his playing days. He has remained deeply involved in Clare GAA, serving in a range of leadership and administrative roles, including as Clare’s representative on Munster Council and as a member of the Clare County Board Executive. He has also continued to support his beloved Clarecastle club and underage hurling within the county, demonstrating a lifelong commitment to the development of the game.
